If you’re traveling to Europe this weekend, it might be good to check your destination for any planned unrest across major cities on the western edge of the continent. Protests are expected in numerous cities across the UK – over a controversial “bedroom tax” – and in Ireland, which has seen a small but consistent movement against the government’s bank bailout program. In Ireland, what was formerly a local weekly protest in Ballyhea has turned into a national call to action under the banner “Ireland Says No”.
There are also demonstrations planned for several Spanish cities – Bilbao and Madrid – consistent with previous efforts by ‘Movimiento 15-M‘ as well as an anti-Assad protest set to take place in Barcelona. Interestingly, pushback against Spain’s home eviction policies has spurred solidarity protests in Paris; will this be something that turns into a rallying call across Europe?
Finally, on a lighter note, if you’re a David Hasselhoff fan you might want to detour through Berlin knowing he’ll be performing a concert for a group supporting preservation of the Berlin Wall.
